World famous in New Zealand
Kiwi celbrities reveal the true cost of stardom
It's brought Charlotte Dawson marriage proposals, free sunglasses for Claire Chitham and unwelcome hangers-on for Hayley Westenra. Louise Wallace calls it a "crock" and Theresa Healey was pelted with water bombs because of it. Being a star means something different to everyone - and it's not all glitz, glamour and designer gowns. These five high-profile women reveal the true price of fame in New Zealand.
'I never wanted to be famous'
HAYLEY WESTENRA (18) was only a young girl from Christchurch when her magical voice catapulted her to international singing stardom
"I was a bit puzzled when the airport check-in upgraded me from economy to business class for a flight from London to New Zealand. Then it dawned on me that my album Pure had recently come out and it was because I'd been recognised.
"That was my first ever fame-related perk and I was really excited. When I got to Auckland, I was also upgraded at the hotel to a really cool suite.
"But I've never taken the perks for granted and in many countries, I'm not well-known and it's nice to go to the supermarket without make-up on or go for a run in the park without caring if I look red and sweaty.
"The worst part of fame is that people I don't even know have a perception about me. They can be mean about me and that's frustrating because I've never even met them. There are also people who try to get to know me because I'm a singer and not because of who I am as a person - but I've got good at spotting them and not getting sucked in.
"It's tough having to look glam all the time simply because it's expected of me. I'm really a jeansand-sneakers kind of girl. In a bookshop once, I was dressed casually and a woman said to me, 'Gosh! You look a bit like Hayley Westenra. Are you her sister?' It was quite funny. I don't tend to be extravagant, apart from buying shoes and organic fruit in London, where I'm based right now.
"My family keeps me grounded. To be honest, I never wanted to be famous -I wanted to sing.
It's a shame when kids say they want the fame but they aren't even sure what they want to be famous for. Fame is simply something that happens sometimes and I've adjusted to it."
