Hayley's triple stalker terror
Hayley Westenra has bodyguards with her at all times after obsessed fans began stalking the singing star
Gorgeous Kiwi singing sensation Hayley Westenra has hired a bodyguard after three obsessed male fans began turning up at her concerts while she has been performing in Europe.
In the most recent incident, Hayley's mum Jill says a crazed fan tried to grab Hayley as she walked off the stage in Berlin, Germany, where she was performing with 'popera' group Il Divo last week.
"We don't know if he was dangerous or not, but he's one of three unusual people who follow her from concert to concert, paying their own airfares to see her in the UK or the US.
"All three of the stalkers are German. One man even forged an invite to her birthday party, but security realised he wasn't meant to be there and threw him out."
Jill says while she was spending time with her daughter on her UK tour, one bizarre occurrence led to Hayley and her entourage being holed up in the singer's dressing room until the path was clear.
"Security knew that one of the obsessed fans was in the crowd, but they didn't see him leave after the concert," explains Jill.
"We waited in Hayley's room with her bodyguard for 45 minutes until they found him."
Another of the stalkers wanted to camp outside the 19-year-old star's hotel bedroom.
But the most frightening experience came when Hayley was on stage singing and she spotted one of the strange men who had been following her. He was standing in the front row of the audience.
"That freaked her out a bit," says Jill, who feels comfortable knowing Hayley's manager, tour manager and bodyguard are in control of the situation.
"They ended up getting one of these guys thrown into a cell to stop him coming to her concert the next day," she says.
"Her tour managers have seen enough of these people to know when you have to step in and do something, and that's what they've done."
One stalker turned up at Hayley's concert and claimed to be blessing the crowd, before he began strangely chanting.
Hayley has also been sent sexually inappropriate mail, but it is intercepted before she sees it.
While the superstar isn't too worried about the stalkers, she is also not taking them lightly.
"I have my security guard with me now. I feel a bit like Beyonce, walking around with a guard always following me," says Hayley.
She has taken other safety precautions too, such as never giving out her phone number or e-mail address and always checking into hotels under different names.
"That's quite funny for us when we are calling her," says Jill. "We have to know what her name is at the time. If we get it wrong, we have to go through the list and try the other names she uses!"
Hayley has been working full-on since she left New Zealand in February, performing throughout Europe.
Her latest album Odyssey was recently nominated for Album of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards and she has become so popular in the US, you can even download a Hayley Westenra ringtone for your cellphone.
She's already the United Kingdom's most downloaded classical artist and has released Ave Maria as the first-ever digital-only classical single to be available for download online.
Only last week, Hayley was invited to perform at a concert to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Welsh national anthem. The concert will be held on 29 May in Pontypridd, Wales, and parts of it will be broadcast on BBC radio and television.
That appearance will be followed up by another performance in Wales in June, when Hayley will join a Welsh male choir for a special performance. The teenager has a soft spot for Wales after singing with the internationally famous Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel in 2003.
Meanwhile, Jill has had a few challenges of her own back home in Christchurch.
She's tackling a post-graduate Diploma of Nutrition through Otago University, as well as raising Sophie (16) and Isaac (13) with her husband Gerald. While Sophie also has a great singing voice, she's not rushing to embark on a singing career like her older sister, having seen how much hard work goes into it and witnessing the flip side of fame.
Isaac has similar views, although he recently found a large crowd of women gathering around him when he was singing in Christchurch.
"He was singing James Blunt's You're Beautiful and people just stopped. His voice really suits that song," says Jill proudly. "But he's a boy doing boys' things at the moment. Isaac's very cruisy and he loves music, too.
"He's managed to move Hayley's stereo into his room while she has been away!"
