HAYLEY'S SURPRISE PROPOSAL
FRENCH CHAMPAGNE AND A STUNNING SUNSET THE KIWI SONGBIRD TELLS US ABOUT HER ROMANTIC, REMARKABLE DAY
A month has passed since Hayley Westenra's divine French boyfriend Arnaud Sabard professed his love and asked her to be his wife in what she describes as a "magical" proposal, but the songstress says she's still getting used to the idea.
"It hasn't quite sunk in," she confides, on the phone to Woman's Day from her west London flat, still jet-lagged after the long flight back from New Zealand. Her sound engineer fiance is away working. "I'm still comprehending it myself," he says via email.
Hayley, 24, says that although she keeps catching glimpses of the gorgeous white and pink diamond ring they designed together, she's in a kind of happy daze from the events of the past few weeks.
"It's a lovely time. Being engaged - it just puts a little sparkle in your eye, you know? We are both really excited." It was New Year's Day when Arnaud, 32, brought Hayley to tears with his romantic lakeside proposal. Hayley had decided to introduce her boyfriend of three years to Queenstown "one of my favourite places and Arnaud had never been there. It really showcases NZ's beauty" - but had absolutely no clue that Arnaud was about to surprise her.
PARENTS' HELP
A few weeks earlier, just before the annual Westenra Christmas barbecue in Christchurch, Arnaud asked Hayley's beloved dad Gerald for his eldest daughter's hand. "It was very scary and stressful," he recalls.
"I couldn't seem to find the right moment to do it." Hayley responds, "My family loved Arnaud from the moment they first met him. So if he was nervous to ask my dad, he needn't have been."
In fact, thrilled at the prospect of having Arnaud join the family, Gerald and Hayley's mum Jill dug out Hayley's great-grandmother's antique ring.
"They entrusted it to me for the day I would ask. I wanted the first ring she would see to be special," explains Arnaud.
Then, at a secluded spot on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, with the majestic Remarkables as the backdrop and a beautiful sunset painting the sky, Arnaud popped the cork on a bottle of fine champagne - French, of course - and asked the woman he describes as "perfect" to be his wife.
"I wanted to wait until the end of our date to do it," he says, "but no! The first words that came out of my mouth were the question."
"It was a total surprise and incredibly romantic... I was completely overwhelmed," Hayley tells with a laugh. "I think I went into shock. I didn't even say 'yes' straight away - Arnaud had to prompt me. He said, 'So, that's a yes, right?' and I was like, 'Of course!'"
The ecstatic pair spent the next hour "Skyping parents and making a lot of international phone calls to our closest friends and family. There may have been a bit of smudged eyeliner." Had Arnaud always thought she would say yes?
"I had actually considered that maybe she would say no," he admits. "Although everyone told me that I was being stupid!" Back in Hayley's hometown a few days later, Hayley asked her gemologist dad to help them create a new diamond ring "because I have a sister, and my great-grandmother's ring belongs to the family".
With craftmanship from Christchurch jeweller Jacek Pawlowski of European Jewellers, who set the dazzling one-carat white diamond and six pink Argyle diamonds sourced from Western Australia in platinum, Hayley, Arnaud and Gerald - "and my whole family, I mean, that's how things work with us!" - designed an antique-inspired ring that Hayley simply loves.
"It's truly gorgeous - even more beautiful than I imagined."
SHARED PASSION
After spending a blissful month enjoying a typically Kiwi summer, Hayley and Arnaud parted ways last week - she flew back to "arctic" London to start work on a new album, while he tours Europe for work. But there are many incredible memories of their holiday. Firstly, Arnaud got to meet one of his rugby heroes - Dan Carter - when Hayley was invited to sing at his December wedding to Honor Dillon. "It was really wonderful to be a part of their special day." Hayley says rugby is a shared passion. "Arnaud's a massive rugby fan, and so am I. The Rugby World Cup ... that was pretty intense, as you can imagine.
We're both so patriotic - which is the way it should be - so he was disappointed that he was in France for the night of the final while I was in NZ at the game." Hayley laughs, joking, "Actually, it was probably better that way! Things could have turned out quite differently for us if we'd been together that night!"
There was also a scary moment for them when they experienced a magnitude 5.8 earthquake two days before Christmas. "Arnaud was at my parents' home by himself and I was out at Riccarton Mall- not a nice place to be in an earthquake! I was pretty scared - it wasn't much fun for Arnaud either." But it was the only negative during an otherwise idyllic summer "with a big surprise thrown in!"
Hayley admits they're not quite ready to plan the wedding yet.
"There are a few logistics to sort out with families on opposite sides of the world. You want the day to be special and personal, so we need to have a long think about it."
But she knows Arnaud is "the one" and says she feels like "the luckiest girl in the world".
"It's hard to put my finger on all of the things I love about him," she admits. "But it's the way he makes me feel. I'm at my happiest when he's with me."
