NZで発売されている雑誌「New Idea 8th March 2008」で紹介された記事。
と、その記事の前に、この記事の発端となった記事をまずはご紹介します。
Guest Bookでは話題にしたのですが、ここまで「炎上」するとは思わなかったのでまとめていませんでした。
いい機会ですので、順を追ってここに残しておきたいと思います。
まず、「事件」は2008年2月23日(土)に、Hayleyとは全く関係ないところで起きました。
まずは、New Zealand Heraldから。文中の太字は、わかりやすいように僕のほうでしました。

New Zealand's opera diva and its popera darling perform in Auckland this weekend - weather permitting.
But Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has no intention of sharing the limelight with Hayley Westenra.
An icy blast puts the youngster firmly in her place, as Dame Kiri says: "Have you heard Hayley? She's not in my world, she's never been in it at all."
Speaking to Canvas magazine, Dame Kiri decried the popular operatic style that Westenra has taken to the top of the charts in Britain and New Zealand.
"They are all fake singers, they sing with a microphone.
"People call them up-and-coming, but they never last. They are the new fakes for the new generation."
Dame Kiri is to sing at the Starlight Symphony in the Auckland Domain tonight, and Westenra will perform with Dave Dobbyn in a concert at the Villa Maria Estate tomorrow.
Westenra would not be drawn on Dame Kiri's comments, but appears to have outlasted the diva's observation that "these people, two or three years and they're gone".
The blustery weather did not keep Dame Kiri from a rehearsal last night, but Starlight Symphony organisers say they will decide today whether to postpone until tomorrow.
Anyone hoping to enjoy both singers might then have to choose whose words they'd rather hear.

なんか、ゴシップ紙のような扱いで．．．一応、これでもNZの一流紙なんですけれど．．．
なんであれ、超ベテラン、そして、Dameの称号を持っているKiriが、Hayleyを含む、Crossover singerを「Fake singer (まやかしの歌手、偽物の歌手)」として「叩いた」のです。
そして、こちらが詳細のKiriの記事。同日の別紙「Canvas」から抜粋。

I thought it was a reasonable question: Has the rapid rise of so-called classical crossover, singers like Westenra, created a new audience for opera? A kind of trickle-up effect?
"I don't talk about crossover," replies the Dame. "Have you heard Hayley? She's not in my world, she's never been in it at all.
She's one of those singers singing today, very successfully but she's not in my world and never will be. And I will never be in hers. They [popera stars] are all fake singers, they sing with a microphone. People call them up-and-coming, but they never last. They are the new fakes for the new generation coming through, but they can only perform with a microphone and they've basically never had any form of formal training. I've had a 40-year career, but these people, two or three years and they're gone."
Perhaps wisely, Westenra declined to respond, but she shouldn't take the lambast too much to heart as Dame Kiri has copped far worse. She was debbed the Queen of Crossover herself in the mid-80s, after releasing her own takes on South Pacific and My Fair Lady. Mums and grannies lapped it up, but the Broadway crowd said she was too opera, too pasionless, while the opera crowd screamed "sell-out" and debbed her "Dreary Kiri".

これを読んだ時は、ふーん、Kiriってきっついこと言うなぁ、という感じだったのですが、これがNZ全土を揺るがすほどの「事件」になるとは僕はこの時には思ってもみませんでした！
詳細は割愛しますが、Hayleyファンはあっちこっちで議論していましたし、NZの地方紙を含む新聞や雑誌がこの「事件」を意外なほど大きく扱っていました。
個人的に、『Kiri 223の変』と呼ばせて頂きます。(笑)
そして、この記事が載った次の日は、HayleyはDave DobbynとのAucklandのVilla Mariaでのワイナリーコンサート。Kiriは、Auckland DomainでStarlight Symphonyという無料コンサートでのゲスト出演という、ビックリするようなガチンコ対決となったのです。
結果的に、どちらも天気には恵まれ、それぞれによかったようです。
Hayley側のコンサートの様子は、僕の超長文コンサートレポートをどうぞ。さて、Hayleyサイドとしては、Kiriのその発言に対して特にコメントはしませんでした。同じ土俵には乗りません、と。
しかし、それでもGeraldはこんなことを言っていました。
the two singers' styles were "like apples and oranges" and it was wrong to compare them.
確かにその通りだと思います。
そして、僕は、そのAucklandでのコンサートでHayleyに会いました。
もちろん、この記事を読んだ時のHayleyはそれなりにショックで傷心していたでしょうが(← これは僕の勝手な憶測ですので、誤解なきよう)、僕が見る限り、さほど気にしていないようでした。
僕自身もあえてこの話題を出しませんでしたし。このHayleyの様子を見て、僕は一安心。と同時に、これ以上この件についてとやかく言うのもあれだな、と思ってこれ以上何も言いませんでした。
(しかし、一部のHayleyファンはまだ引きずっていて、今でもそれなりの議論をしているようです。)日本のHayleyファンからの情報もあって、興味があって調べたことがあります。
Kiriは、Crowwover Singerのことをボロクソに言っておりますが、さてさて、当の本人は？
そのHayleyファンからの情報には、Kiriには、アメリカの古いスタンダードナンバーを歌ったアルバムがある、というものでした。
調べてみますと、ありました！
邦題は「夢見る頃を過ぎても」、原題は「Blue Skies」。1985年リリース。
ここで視聴も出来ます。なかなかムードのあるアルバムで、これはこれでいいと思いました。
こういうアルバムを作っているにもかかわらず、そういう発言をするKiriはどうなのだろう？と思うのは僕だけではないはず。
こういうアルバムを作ったこと自体忘れるほど彼女はもうろくしたのでしょうか？あと、Wikipediaに載っていたKiriの情報としては、20代前半にコンテストで優勝はし
ていたようですが、
Londonに渡った時はさしたる歌唱テクニックは持っていなか ったようです。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K iri_Te_Kanawa Kiriは、上記の記事で、40年のキャリアがある、と豪語しておりますが、そういうキャリアを持った現状の人と、歌を本格的に初めて6年ほどの歌手を比較して一体どうしようというのでしょう？全くもって同じ土俵に立っておりません。
僕個人的にはこう思っております。
そのAucklandでのHayleyのコンサートは本当によかったです。歌唱テクニック云々、Opera唱法云々という話ではないと、個人的には思います。
ジャンルがCrossoverであれ、Operaであれ、感動する時はする。しかし、感動しない時はしない。
この世の音楽はOperaだけではなく、また、Operaが世界最高峰の音楽であると言い切るのはおかしい。そういうものは人それぞれ。今のKiriにとっての音楽の世界はほとんどがOperaなのでしょう。だから、ああいう発言になるのだと思います。
Kiriは、マスコミにインタビューされると時々問題発言をし、色々と突っ込まれる存在のようで、そういう話が以前あったのを僕は知っていたこともあり、なおさらKiriの言っていることはちょっとなぁ、と思うのでありました。
とりあえず、自身の立場、自身の発言がどれほど大きいものか、どれほど影響力があるかを自覚すべきでしょう。ちなみに、Kiriは、まだほとぼり冷めない2月26日(火)に、TV One 「Dancing With The Stars」という番組にゲスト歌手として出演。この番組の前シーズンでは、Hayleyも出演しました。体調がよくない時で、歌声は本当に最悪だったんですけれど．．．
しかし、よりによって、どこまでこう「同調」するのでしょう？もとから決まっていたことでしょうが、なんか可笑しいです。
さて、一体何の曲を歌うのだろう？と思って僕は注目していました。
伴奏を聴いて僕は転けました。(笑)
Tonight
そう、West Side Storyのあの名曲です。
次は、Somewhere
・・・・・・・・ と、僕の思考。
一体彼女は何を考えているのでしょう？
あれほどのことを言っておいて、それでこういう曲を歌うって？？
普通だったら、貫禄を見せつけて、Operaのこれは！っていう曲を披露するのでは？Crossover singerとの差をはっきりと見せつければいいのでは？ノリのいいOpera曲なんていくらでもあるでしょうに。
聴いていて、正直、上手いなんて思えるようなものではありませんでした。とりあえず、彼女の歌い方では、「この手の歌」は合わないと思います。
(録画しておけばよかった、とちょっと後悔。)この番組を出た後の記事だったかははっきりとは覚えていませんが、Kiriは、あの記事の内容は、Hayley個人に対して言ったことではない、というような「弁明」をしていたようですが、今更、という感じです。
やっと本題。
もう、かれこれ1週間ほど経っております。が、まだマスコミはこれを引きずっており、New Ideaという女性週刊誌がHayleyからコメントをもらっております。
沈黙を破って果たしてHayleyはなんと言っているのでしょうか？
Hayley Westenra: A CLEAN CONSCIENCE
In spite of the star's, Hayley Westenra is fully focused on improving the world around her
Elegantly dressed, immaculately groomed and exuding confidence, Hayley Westenra has won over her audience even before she sings a single note.
The phenomenally successful songstress has won plaudits the world over in what has been a remarkable rise to fame. But here in New Zealand, she is adored for more than just her pure, exquisite voice.
But not everyone is a fan. Last week, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa launched a stinging attack on Hayley, branding her 'fake' and questioning her staying power. Hayley wisely chose not to respond to these remarks but plenty of people have leapt to her defence, showing how much this luminous talent has endeared herself to a very proud nation.
Speaking to New Idea in her role of UNICEF ambassador, Hayley appears unruffied by the controversy. She is well aware that her celebrity status marks her for criticism, but she doesn't let it curb her choices.
'I'm definitely aware of it, but you can't let it control your life,' the 20-year-old says.
'I just try not to worry about people judging me.' The inspiring young woman, plucked from the streets of Christchurch in her early teens and plunged into international musical stardom, is supremely confident about her ability to go the distance and righrly believes her future is bright.
'I'm very content to do my own thing and develop in my own way,' she explains.
'I love creating new music with Dave Dobbyn, but that doesn't mean I want to go down that road. I will keep creating and hopefully as I move forward I will take the audience with me.'
The grace with which Hayley has handled Dame Kiri's comments is typical of the pretty young singer's composure. When Hayley opens her mouth, people listen, and that's power she's learning how to harness.
'It's a bit bizarre having people listen to what you say but it's great to be able to use the power my singing gives me to give something back,' says Hayley, who turns 21 next month.
'When I first became a UNICEF ambassador at the age of16, I was keen to go on a trip to give me more authority to speak. Now that I have been to Ghana, I do feel quite comfortable with the little bit of power I do have because I've seen it with my own eyes.' The Christchurch-raised popera star is urging Kiwis to support UNICEF's Tap Project from April 5 to 11.
For this campaign, restaurants around the country will request a donation for serving tap water to customers to raise money for irrigation projects in developing countries. The initiative was launched last year in New York, and New Zealand is the second and only other country after the US to get on board.
'I've seen how horrific the situation is. People are drinking from guinea worm-infested ponds and ingesting worms which come to the surface and cause open wounds,' Hayley says. 'Children are in a lot of pain and can't go to school. In our society, water is something we all take for granted but these people are drinking coffee-coloured, dirty water because they have no choice.'
Not all young stars today have such a strong sense of humanitarianism. Despite growing up in the public eye, Hayley has blossomed into an inspiring young role model and has learnt how to harness her fame to make a difference.
'When you're in the public eye, you do have a responsibility when people are watching what you do,' she says. 'It kind of means there's a bit more pressure on me to behave well but it's nice that I'm inspiring young children.
'I do have to be aware of my image but I never have to rein myself in. It's not much of an effort to keep my image up.' The clean-cut songstress is now based in London, where she owns a two-bedroom apartment. And it seems the adage is true - you can take the girl out of New Zealand, but you can't take the New Zealand out of the girl.
'It would be quite easy to be swept up by London life and all the craziness that goes along with it,' Hayley reflects.
'My Kiwi upbringing has ensured that I have stayed grounded. I'm close to my family and still stay in close contact with them, and I hang out with down-to-earth people too.
'I do enjoy the buzzes of London city, but I'm still a Kiwi girl at heart.' Socialising provides valuable respite from her relentless schedule, but down-time has not always been a priority. 'When I was younger, I was a little bit too focused on my career, But in the last few years I've found a really good balance and learnt you don't always need to do everything,' says Hayley, who is dating and describes herself as 'super picky' when it comes to boys.
'My sister's just started urn and is going to orientation week with toga parties. It all sounds like so much fun, but I don't feel like I've missed out on anything. I feel like I have been so lucky to be living such a rich life.'

20才そこそこでここまでの心境に達している彼女は大したものです。
